EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
** CHANDRA **
|
|
This month’s Employee of the Month is Animal Intake
Coordinator, Chandra Cushman. Chandra began her
employment at PHS on May 18th, 2007. She started as
a part time employee, but was quickly moved into a
full time position. She began working with cats,
cleaning kennels in the isolation unit and cathouses
in the main house. |
|
Before long, she had learned
to give meds and shots to the felines, after which she
received training in dogs and puppies; performing blood
draws, and learning the sad job of euthanasia, which led to
promotion in her current position.
She says she has “worked hard
to get where [she is] now.” She has seen the worst and the
best at PHS. She’s “watched wonderful dogs and cats go to
loving, forever homes; seen great dogs and cats turned in by
their owners, returned to [PHS after adoption], or brought
in off the streets.” She’s grown close to cats that she’s
personally had to euthanize due to illness. And she’s
gotten close to puppies from 6 weeks of age who remain at
the shelter after 6 months.
Before Chandra leaves the
shelter each night, she tells “every dog, every puppy, every
kitten and every cat that I love them, good night, and that
I hope they get adopted.”
Chandra recently considered
working for a veterinarian, but something happened to change
her mind. A woman and her daughter came to the shelter one
day saying they believed that one of their 2 puppies had
Parvo. The puppy owners had been to “every vet in town, and
no one would do anything for them without money up front.”
This infuriated Chandra. She immediately performed a Parvo
test on the pups, which came back positive, and gave the
family the supplies they needed to nurse their dogs back to
health. Just last week the same mother and daughter returned
to the shelter to thank Chandra and tell her that the puppy
survived. It was then that Chandra knew that the Payson
Humane Society was the place she wanted to be forever, and
she now intends to become a certified vet tech so that she
can do even more for the animals when our new shelter is
built.
Chandra says of the shelter
“We will help anyone, no questions asked, no money up front.
We are all here because we love the animals. I am a part of
a wonderful, heartfelt, small community of people who are
devoted to deserving animals. I will do whatever I can to
help any animal and PHS has helped me to become a caring,
compassionate person. I love truly love my job, and every
animal that passes through.”
Chandra has overcome many
challenges since leaving home at age 15, but through it all,
she has become a compassionate and accomplished woman and
has found a place where she is truly a well-respected
employee. In addition, Chandra is a loving and caring
mother to 9-month-old Aiden, who shares the above photo with
her.
One day, it is Chandra’s
dream to be the Shelter Director of the Payson Humane
Society. We believe her wish will come true. |

PAYSON HUMANE SOCIETY ~ NEW SHELTER
UPDATE
The Payson Humane
Society (PHS) debuted the official color rendering of its proposed new
shelter at a citizens participation meeting for neighbors on Monday July
1st.
The rendering, by
local artist Brenda Baker, captures the 14,500-square-foot facility’s
frontier façade, designed to complement the other components of historic
Main Street. The new shelter will be built just south of Main Street behind
the current shelter at 812 S. McLane Road on property recently occupied by
an auto salvage yard.
Marcus MacFarlane of
Amon Builders, the local building contractor selected for the project, made
the bulk of the presentation Monday evening. “It’s going to be a very nice
building,” MacFarlane told the 14 people in attendance…. “It’s nothing like
the facility they have now.”
The new shelter was
designed by Shelter Planners of America, a California based company that has
designed over 700 state-of-the-art shelters across the country.
Shelter officials
point out that it will accommodate the anticipated growth of the Rim Country
for the next 30 years, and they emphasize that it will be an asset to Main
Street and the entire Rim Country. The exterior of the new facility features
a standing seam green metal roof, with the walls built of three kinds of
masonry block. The front facade features posted beams with round columns and
king trusses. But paramount for the planners and shelter officials was
creating a facility that would be soundproof – making the new shelter
virtually silent from the parking lot.
